What Does a Breeder Observe in Their Dogs?

Living with many dogs and observing many dogs as a breeder may look similar, but to me, they are slightly different things.

Of course, every dog here is an important member of my family.

We play together, they come to me for affection, and they make me laugh every day.

But as a breeder, I cannot look at them only through the eyes of someone who loves their pets.

I also observe their structure and movement, temperament, interactions with other dogs, and — for breeding dogs — the qualities they may pass on to future generations.

Even ordinary moments in everyday life can teach me something about an individual dog.

The goal isn’t always for dogs to “become friends”

When introducing a cautious dog to others, I don’t necessarily expect them to quickly become friends.

My first goal is much simpler:

For that dog to be able to comfortably share the same space.

They don’t have to play together.
They don’t have to stay close to each other.
They don’t have to become best friends.

Being able to calmly coexist while keeping a comfortable distance can be enough.

The same applies to building a relationship with people.

Some dogs need more time.

Rather than constantly approaching them or trying to force a relationship, sometimes I simply continue with my normal routine — cleaning the yard, picking up after the dogs, filling in yet another hole someone has dug, and carrying on with the day.

Relationships can gradually develop through those ordinary moments.

Small disagreements can tell us something

When many dogs live together, small disagreements sometimes happen.

I don’t automatically intervene in every minor interaction.

That does not mean I simply leave dogs to “sort it out.”

I am watching.

When will this dog back away?

If the other dog backs away, will the interaction end?

Will one dog continue pursuing the other?

Is the level of arousal continuing to rise?

Has the situation reached the point where I need to intervene?

If I believe the situation is becoming unsafe, I step in.

But everyday interactions between dogs can reveal aspects of their personalities and relationships.

That is one reason knowing each dog’s usual behavior matters so much.

Even correcting one dog may affect another

There are times when a dog needs to be corrected or interrupted.

But I am particularly careful when a cautious dog is nearby.

Even when another dog is the one being corrected, I cannot know exactly how the dog watching the interaction interprets what is happening.

I therefore think about how my own behavior may affect the relationship I have been slowly building with that dog.

This doesn’t mean I spend every moment seriously analyzing my dogs.

Most of our life is simply normal everyday life.

But by seeing their “normal” every day, changes can become easier to notice.

Looking at dogs as a breeder

With dogs who may be part of my breeding program, another perspective is added.

They are still beloved members of my family.

At the same time, I consider their temperament, instincts, behavior, physical structure and movement, and what qualities I may or may not want to carry into the next generation.

Breeding cannot be decided simply because a dog is cute or because I love that dog.

A breeder also has to think about the puppies who may come next.

To me, that is part of the responsibility of breeding dogs.

Knowing each dog’s “normal”

Over time, I gradually learn what is normal for each individual dog.

Who they prefer to spend time with.

What raises their excitement.

When they choose to back away.

What makes them uncomfortable.

How they approach people.

I will never be able to completely know what a dog is thinking.

There are many times when I wish I could simply ask, “Why did you do that?”

Still, by watching the small things day after day, we can learn more about the individual dog in front of us.

For me, observing dogs doesn’t only happen during a special evaluation.

It happens while I clean the yard.
While I fill in the holes they’ve dug.
While they run together.
Even during the brief moments when two dogs simply pass each other.

Through all of those ordinary moments, I slowly learn what “normal” looks like for each dog.

Knowing each individual dog’s “normal” is one of the things I value most in my everyday life as a breeder.
