I’m Not Trying to Breed “Bigger Italian Greyhounds”
I’ll start by saying this openly: I personally like Italian Greyhounds with a larger, more substantial build.
Gru is probably one of the best examples.
But I do not love Gru simply because he is big.
I love his head and expression.
I love his body.
I love the way he moves when he truly switches on and runs.
It is the combination of all these qualities that makes me love Gru as an individual dog.
Size alone is not what I am looking for.
And this distinction is very important when I talk about my breeding philosophy.
Size Is Not My Breeding Goal
When I evaluate an Italian Greyhound for breeding, I look at much more than size.
Bone, muscle, depth of chest, overall structure, head type, movement, health and temperament all matter to me.
When I try to preserve several of these qualities together, the resulting dogs may sometimes grow larger.
But producing bigger Italian Greyhounds is not the goal itself.
There is an important difference between deliberately breeding for size and producing a larger dog as a result of selecting for several other qualities.
A Number on the Scale Does Not Describe the Whole Dog
Size and substance are not the same thing.
A small Italian Greyhound can be beautifully balanced, and a larger dog is not automatically stronger or more substantial.
Weight alone cannot tell us about bone, muscle, chest depth, structure or how a dog uses its body in motion.
That is why I prefer to look at the whole dog rather than judge it by a single number.
The Physical Demands on a Mother
When selecting females for my breeding program, I generally avoid choosing extremely small and delicate females.
This does not mean that small Italian Greyhounds are bad or unhealthy.
It is simply part of my own breeding philosophy.
A mother does not experience only the moment of giving birth. Her body must carry a pregnancy, go through whelping and then nourish her puppies through lactation.
For that reason, I prefer my breeding females to have as much physical reserve as reasonably possible.
Again, this does not mean “bigger is always better.”
Personal Preference and the Breed Standard Are Not the Same Thing
Italian Greyhounds have a breed standard, and as a breeder I cannot ignore it simply because I have my own preferences.
The dog I personally love and the dog I should aim for as a breeder are not necessarily exactly the same.
That distinction matters to me.
I may love a larger, more substantial Italian Greyhound, while still recognizing that preserving breed type must remain part of responsible breeding.
Finding the balance between those things is one of the difficult parts of breeding.
What If Someone Wants “a Bigger Italian Greyhound”?
If someone loves the elegant appearance of an Italian Greyhound but wants a somewhat larger sighthound, I think it is also worth learning about the Whippet rather than simply asking the Italian Greyhound to become larger.
Whippets share certain visual qualities with Italian Greyhounds, and both belong to the sighthound family.
I personally love Greyhounds as well, but breeding Greyhounds was not realistic for my own environment. Discovering the Whippet eventually led me to welcome the breed into my life and later into my breeding program.
However, after living with both Italian Greyhounds and Whippets, I do not see them as the same dog in different sizes.
They may look similar at first glance, but to me they are very different breeds.
Their bodies, temperaments and even the expression of colors and markings have their own characteristics.
A bigger Italian Greyhound does not simply become a Whippet.
And I am not trying to create an Italian Greyhound that resembles a Whippet.
Italian Greyhounds should have their own identity, and Whippets should have theirs.
Both deserve to be appreciated for what they are.
Breeding Does Not Allow Us to Add Only the Traits We Want
Genetics makes all of this even more complicated.
Breeding is not like choosing individual parts:
the head from one dog,
the bone from another,
the movement from another,
and the chest from another.
Introducing new blood does not bring only the trait we wanted. Other traits come with it.
Lines that have been selected consistently over generations may offer more predictability, but inheritance is never completely under our control.
So we evaluate the puppies that are born.
We decide what we want to preserve.
We consider what may need improvement.
And then we think about the next generation.
Not Forcing My Personal Taste Onto the Breed
I love larger, substantial Italian Greyhounds.
That is part of my personal taste, and probably always will be.
But loving something does not mean I should force that preference onto an entire breed.
I have to think about my ideal, breed type, health, the physical demands placed on breeding females, and the lives the puppies will eventually live with their families.
All of these things matter at the same time.
That is why I do not describe my breeding program as one that “breeds big Italian Greyhounds.”
Sometimes larger dogs are born as a result of selecting for several qualities that matter to me.
That is a much more accurate description.
That Is Why Breeding Is So Difficult
What should we preserve?
What should we improve?
How far should personal preference influence a breeding program?
And how do we preserve the qualities that define a breed while also thinking about the health and future of each dog?
There is no simple answer.
We evaluate each dog, plan a breeding, observe the puppies that are born, and then think again.
It is an ongoing process.
I want to continue looking at the whole dog—not simply whether an Italian Greyhound is “big” or “small.”
I breed not for trends, but with the dog they will be ten years from now in mind.
