Do Italian Greyhounds Need Long Walks? How CuddlyAnimal Thinks About Walking and Exercise “Do Italian Greyhounds need a lot of exercise?” “Do they need very long walks every day?” These are questions we are often asked during visits and consultations. Italian Greyhounds are slim, athletic dogs with long legs, so they can easily give the impression that they require a huge amount of daily exercise. They are indeed sighthounds with excellent running ability. However, at CuddlyAnimal, we do not believe that “high exercise needs” automatically means “they must walk for hours every day.” Of course, walks are very important. But walking has many purposes beyond simply tiring a dog out physically. A Walk Is More Than Just Exercise For dogs, the outside world is full of stimulation. The smell of the wind, grass and soil, traces left by other dogs, people’s voices, traffic sounds, birds, and even changes in the air between seasons can all provide information. Things that may seem ordinary to us can be very meaningful to a dog. Stopping to sniff, looking around, and listening to unfamiliar sounds are all valuable parts of a walk. Sniffing is especially important. During walks, people sometimes feel that a dog should keep moving forward without stopping. However, continuously walking ahead is not the only way to have a good walk. As long as it is safe, allowing a dog time to explore the environment in their own way can be very beneficial. Walking and Running Use the Body Differently Italian Greyhounds are sighthounds that are naturally built to run. Because of this, walking at a human pace and running freely involve very different types of movement. Walking still has physical benefits. However, we do not think exercise should be judged only by statements such as: “I walked my dog for one hour today, so that must be enough.” For a healthy adult dog, depending on temperament and physical condition, it can also be beneficial to include opportunities to run, play, and use the whole body in a safe environment. When watching sighthounds such as Italian Greyhounds and Whippets run, you can clearly see that they use not only their hind legs, but also their shoulders, back, core, and entire body. Walking and running each have their own roles. You Do Not Need to Focus Only on Minutes and Distance When researching exercise for dogs, you will often see guidelines such as: “X minutes per day” or “X hours per day.” These recommendations can be useful as a general reference. However, every dog is different. Exercise needs vary depending on age, body type, health, fitness level, personality, and lifestyle. A puppy has different needs from an adult dog. A senior dog has different needs from a young, active dog. Even among Italian Greyhounds, some dogs love to run, while others prefer a calmer lifestyle. That is why, at CuddlyAnimal, we believe it is important to look beyond how many minutes a dog has walked. Instead, we ask: Is this dog physically and mentally satisfied? Walks Are Also Time Spent Together Walking has another important role. It is time shared between the dog and the owner. Walking in the same direction, stopping together, waiting while the dog sniffs, and observing the world side by side are all forms of communication. Rather than focusing only on distance or time, it can be helpful to notice things such as: What did your dog want to sniff today? What caught their attention? Did they seem relaxed and interested? Looking at walks this way can make everyday time with your dog feel very different. How CuddlyAnimal Thinks About Italian Greyhound Walks At CuddlyAnimal, we do not see walks simply as “time for exercise.” Walks can be a chance to enjoy outdoor stimulation. They can be a chance to sniff and explore. They can be valuable time spent with the owner. And when appropriate, they can be combined with opportunities to move the body more dynamically in a safe environment. We believe these different elements should be adjusted to suit each dog’s age, health, fitness level, and personality. You do not need to think, “Because this is an Italian Greyhound, I have to walk for hours every day.” What matters most is this: That the individual dog feels fulfilled both mentally and physically. Rather than focusing only on time and distance, we hope owners can enjoy walks and exercise while paying attention to the dog in front of them. This article reflects CuddlyAnimal’s experience and approach to caring for dogs. Appropriate exercise levels vary depending on age, health, fitness level, and lifestyle. If your dog has a medical condition or you are unsure about exercise, please consult your veterinarian.
