Giving Birth Is Never That Simple — A Puppy’s Price Is Not the “Price of a Life” When people think about dog breeding, the process may sound simple: Breeding, pregnancy, birth, and then healthy puppies. But in reality, giving birth is never that simple. As a breeder, I have witnessed many births and watched many puppies come into this world. Yet no two births are exactly the same. Every mother is different. Every pregnancy is different. And every puppy is an individual life. Every birth requires difficult decisions During pregnancy, we carefully monitor the mother’s health and prepare for delivery. Once labor begins, we must continuously assess the situation. Should we wait and allow labor to progress naturally? Should we assist? Should we contact our veterinarian? Should we go to the hospital? Is a C-section necessary? These decisions must be made based on the information available at that exact moment. Looking back afterward, it is always possible to wonder, “What if I had done something differently?” But during a birth, decisions cannot be made with the benefit of hindsight. When lives are in our care, every decision carries responsibility. Birth is only the beginning The moment a puppy is born safely is incredibly special. But birth is not the finish line. We continue to monitor whether each puppy is nursing properly, gaining weight, maintaining body temperature, eliminating normally, and showing healthy activity. Sometimes supplemental feeding is necessary. The mother’s condition must also be carefully monitored. Newborn puppies cannot tell us when something is wrong, so we must notice the smallest changes for them. Sometimes, despite everything, a life cannot be saved This is one of the hardest realities of being a breeder. No matter how carefully we prepare, how much experience we have, or how deeply we wish for every puppy to survive, not every life can be saved. That never becomes easy. Every loss makes us reflect on what happened, what we could have done differently, and what we can learn for the future. That reflection is also part of our responsibility as breeders. The price of a puppy is not the value of its life People sometimes say: “How can you put a price on a dog?” “You should never put a price on a life.” But I do not believe that the price of a puppy represents the value of that puppy’s life. Life itself is priceless. Long before a puppy is born, there is health care for the parent dogs, breeding management, pregnancy care, and preparation for birth. After birth comes around-the-clock care, supplemental feeding when necessary, veterinary care, health examinations, vaccinations, microchipping, and everything required to prepare that puppy for life with a new family. All of this requires time, knowledge, financial resources, and above all, responsibility. A puppy’s price is not a number placed on the value of its life. It reflects everything required to responsibly bring that puppy into the world, raise it, protect it, and prepare it for its future family. Growing up healthy is never something we take for granted By the time families meet our puppies, they are often running, playing, eating, and getting into mischief. It can look effortless. But breeders know the story that came before. We remember when those puppies were tiny enough to fit in our hands. We remember watching them search for their mother’s milk. We remember weighing them and feeling relieved when the number increased. And we also remember the lives that, despite everything we did, could not stay with us. That is why we never take for granted: Being born safely. Growing up healthy. And finally going home to a loving family. We are not simply producing dogs to sell. We are caring for individual lives. And we will continue to treat every one of those lives with the responsibility and respect it deserves. Thank you for being born. And thank you for growing with us. 🐾
