昔の私は、ブリーダーとは犬を交配し、子犬を産ませる人だと思っていました。 もちろん今でも、それは間違いではないと思います。 しかし、ブリーダーという仕事を続ける中で、私は少しずつ分からなくなっていきました。 最初に知っていたのは、師匠とその周りの世界だけでした。 けれど、自分で動くようになり、たくさんのブリーダーさんと出会いました。 ショーを目指す人。 犬種保存を大切にする人。 ミックス犬を作る人。 趣味から始めた人。 生活のために続ける人。 規模の大きな犬舎もあれば、少数で一犬種だけを大切に守り続けている犬舎もありました。 そして気付いたのは、みんな同じ「ブリーダー」なのに、考え方がまったく違うということでした。 中でも印象に残っているのは、あるブリーダーさんとの出会いです。 その方は犬服屋さんを本業としながら、一犬種だけを長年繁殖していました。 「蛇口の開け閉めが大事なんだよ」 そう教えてくれたことを今でも覚えています。 当時の私には、その言葉の意味がよく分かりませんでした。 しかし年月が経ち、犬たちと暮らし、多くの人と出会い、様々な考え方に触れる中で、少しだけその意味が分かる気がしています。 ただ、それが唯一の正解だとも思いません。 犬種保存を大切にする人にも理由がある。 ショーを目指す人にも理由がある。 家庭犬としての幸せを優先する人にも理由がある。 それぞれに考え方があり、それぞれに歴史があります。 だから今の私は、昔よりもブリーダーという言葉を簡単には語れなくなりました。 むしろ、前より分からなくなっています。 でも、それでいいのかもしれません。 分からないからこそ考える。 考えるからこそ学ぶ。 そして学ぶほど、また新しい疑問が生まれる。 私にとってブリーダーという仕事は、そんな繰り返しなのかもしれません。 今でも答えは出ていません。 けれど、だからこそ面白いのだと思います。

The More I Learn About Breeders, the Less Certain I Become When I first started, I believed a breeder was simply someone who bred dogs and raised puppies. That idea wasn’t wrong. But over the years, after meeting many breeders with different philosophies and goals, I found myself becoming less certain of what the word truly means. Some breeders focus on preserving breeds. Some pursue dog shows. Some breed mixed dogs. Some started as a hobby. Others made it their profession. All of them were breeders, yet their approaches were completely different. One breeder once told me: “The important thing is knowing when to turn the faucet on and when to turn it off.” At the time, I didn’t fully understand. Today, I think I understand a little more. But not enough to call it the only correct answer. The more people I meet, the more I realize there is no single definition that can fully describe every breeder. Instead of finding certainty, I found questions. And strangely, I think that’s a good thing. Because questions lead to learning, and learning leads to understanding. Even now, if someone asks me what a breeder is, I would probably answer: “I know less than I thought I did before.” And perhaps that is part of the journey.
