「本来の犬ってどんな犬なんだろう？」 そんな疑問を考えていたら、気付けば犬種やスタンダードの歴史について調べていました。 犬には犬種標準（スタンダード）があります。 イタリアングレーハウンドにはイタリアングレーハウンドの、キャバリアにはキャバリアの、シェルティにはシェルティのスタンダードがあります。 しかし、そのスタンダードも最初から存在していたわけではありません。 今では当たり前のように呼ばれている犬種たちも、どこかの時代ではまだ犬種として定まっていない頃があったはずです。 では、犬種はいつ犬種になるのでしょうか。 ケネルクラブなどの団体に認められた時でしょうか。 スタンダードが作られた時でしょうか。 それとも、多くの人がその犬種として認識した時でしょうか。 正解は分かりません。 けれど、考えれば考えるほど興味深いテーマだと思います。 もし犬種に認められる前の時代があったのなら、その過程で生まれた犬たちは何と呼ばれていたのでしょう。 現在の感覚で考えればミックス犬だったのでしょうか。 それとも、まだ犬種という概念そのものが曖昧だったのでしょうか。 さらに考えていくと、もうひとつの疑問が浮かびます。 「本来の犬」とは何なのでしょう。 純血種でしょうか。 ミックス犬でしょうか。 それとも、人の手が加わる前のもっと昔の犬でしょうか。 私には分かりません。 ただ、犬種の歴史やスタンダードの成り立ちをたどっていくと、当たり前だと思っていたことが少し違う角度から見えてきます。 犬種にも、スタンダードにも、たくさんの人の試行錯誤や歴史があったのかもしれません。 だから私は、「これが正しい」を探すよりも、「なぜそうなったのだろう？」を考える方が面白いと感じています。 今回の記事は答えを出すための記事ではありません。 犬種とは何か。 スタンダードとは何か。 そして本来の犬とは何か。 そんなことを一緒に考えるきっかけになれば嬉しいです。

What is the “original dog”? While thinking about that question, I found myself exploring the history of dog breeds and breed standards. Today, every recognized breed has a written standard. However, those standards did not exist from the beginning. At some point in history, even the breeds we know today were still developing and had not yet become the breeds we recognize now. So when does a breed become a breed? When it is officially recognized? When a breed standard is established? Or when enough people identify it as a distinct breed? The more I think about it, the more questions arise. And that leads to another question. What is the “original dog”? A purebred dog? A mixed-breed dog? Or perhaps a dog that existed before humans began shaping breeds? I honestly do not know. But exploring the history behind breeds and standards offers a different perspective on many things we take for granted today. Rather than searching for a single correct answer, I enjoy asking: “Why did it become this way?” Sometimes the questions themselves are more interesting than the answers.
