犬たちと暮らしていると、ふと不思議に思うことがあります。 今では当たり前のように存在している犬種たち。 イタリアングレーハウンド、ウィペット、シェルティー、キャバリア、コーギー。 それぞれに歴史があり、スタンダードがあり、犬種として確立されています。 でも、その犬種たちも最初から犬種だったわけではありません。 誰かが理想を描き、 試行錯誤を繰り返し、 長い年月をかけて現在の姿へとつながってきました。 私はブリーダーとして、犬種を守り続けてきた先人たちや、スタンダードを受け継いできた方々をとても尊敬しています。 犬種を維持することは簡単なことではありません。 健康、気質、構成、歴史。 たくさんのものを守りながら次の世代へつないでいく必要があります。 だからこそ、現在の犬種が存在していること自体が、とても価値のあることだと思っています。 一方で、私が興味を持ってしまうのは「完成した犬種」だけではありません。 その犬種が生まれる前の歴史です。 どんな犬たちがいて、 どんな人たちがいて、 どんな失敗や成功があって、 今の犬種になったのだろう。 そんなことを想像すると、とても面白く感じます。 現在は遺伝子検査もあります。 遠く離れたブリーダー同士でも簡単に情報交換ができます。 写真や動画で犬の状態を共有することもできます。 昔の人たちが持っていなかった多くの技術が、今は当たり前に存在しています。 だからこそ時々考えるのです。 100年後の人たちは、今の犬たちをどう見ているのだろう。 今ある犬種はどのように変化しているのだろう。 そして、今はミックス犬と呼ばれている犬たちの中から、新たな犬種が誕生している可能性もあるのだろうか。 もちろん答えはわかりません。 未来のことは誰にもわからないからです。 ただ一つ言えることは、現在存在している犬種たちも、誰かの情熱や努力、そして長い時間の積み重ねによって生まれてきたということです。 犬種を見るのも面白い。 スタンダードを学ぶのも面白い。 でも私は、その犬種が生まれるまでの歴史や、これから先の未来を想像する時間も好きです。 皆さんは100年後の犬たちがどうなっていると思いますか？ そんなことを考えながら犬たちを見ていると、また違った面白さが見えてくるかもしれません。

Have Dog Breeds Always Been Dog Breeds? — Thinking About Dogs 100 Years From Now — When living with dogs, I sometimes find myself wondering about something. The breeds we know today—Italian Greyhounds, Whippets, Shelties, Cavaliers, Corgis, and many others—feel as though they have always existed. But of course, they have not. Every breed began somewhere. Someone had a vision. Someone spent years, generations even, refining that vision. And over time, those dogs became the breeds we know today. As a breeder, I deeply respect the people who preserved breed standards and dedicated themselves to maintaining the health, temperament, and history of their breeds. At the same time, I am fascinated not only by the finished breeds themselves, but also by the stories behind their creation. What kinds of dogs existed before? What challenges did breeders face? How did those early decisions shape the breeds we know today? Modern breeders have access to DNA testing, instant communication, photos, videos, and information from around the world. The people who created many of today’s breeds had none of these advantages. That is why I sometimes wonder: What will dogs look like 100 years from now? How will today’s breeds evolve? Could some of the dogs we currently call mixed breeds become recognized breeds in the distant future? There are no clear answers. But thinking about the history of dogs—and imagining their future—is one of the things I enjoy most. Perhaps the story of dog breeds is still being written.
