イタリアングレーハウンド（イタグレ）の性格について調べると、「甘えん坊」「人が大好き」「飼い主にべったり」といった言葉をよく目にします。 実際、イタグレには家族との距離がとても近く、人にくっついて過ごすことを好む子が多くいます。 毛布の中に潜り込んできたり、膝の上に乗ったり、ソファに座れば当然のように隣にやってきたり。 「できるだけ飼い主さんの近くにいたい」という姿は、イタグレと暮らす大きな魅力のひとつだと思います。 ただし、ここで少し注意したいことがあります。 「甘えん坊」＝「誰にでもすぐ懐く」ではありません。 家族にはベッタリ。でも知らない人には慎重？ 家族には全身で甘えてくるのに、初めて会う人には少し距離を取る。 触ろうとするとスッと離れたり、少し離れた場所から相手の様子を観察したりする。 そんなイタグレも珍しくありません。 反対に、初対面の人にも自分から近づき、 「こんにちは！撫でて！」 と言わんばかりに歓迎する子もいます。 つまり、イタグレという犬種に一定の傾向はあっても、すべての子が同じ性格ではありません。 「イタグレは人懐っこいと聞いていたのに、うちの子は知らない人を警戒する」 という場合でも、それだけでおかしいわけではありません。 イタグレは周囲の変化に敏感な一面も イタグレは、身体が細く繊細に見えるだけでなく、周囲の変化や人の動きなどに敏感に反応する子もいます。 知らない人、知らない場所、聞き慣れない音などに対して、まず安全かどうかを確認してから行動するタイプもいます。 そのため、初対面の人に対してすぐに近づかないからといって、 「人が嫌い」 「社会化に失敗した」 「性格に問題がある」 と単純に決めつける必要はありません。 その子なりに、 「この人は大丈夫かな？」 と確認しているだけの場合もあります。 もちろん、強い恐怖や日常生活に支障が出るほどの警戒心については別に考える必要がありますが、慎重であること自体は必ずしも問題行動ではありません。 無理に「挨拶させる」必要はありません 慎重な子に対して、早く慣れてほしいからと 「ほら、挨拶して」 「大丈夫だから触ってもらいな」 と無理に近づけることが、かえって負担になることもあります。 まずは少し距離を取って様子を見る。 自分から近づいてきたら匂いを確認する時間を作る。 嫌だと思ったときに離れられる距離を残しておく。 そんなふうに、犬自身が選べる状況を作ってあげることも大切です。 時間をかけて「この人は大丈夫」と分かれば、自分から距離を縮めていく子もいます。 早く仲良くなることよりも、その子が安心できることを優先してあげたいと考えています。 子犬の頃の経験も大切。でも、それだけでは決まりません 人や環境に対する反応には、子犬期の経験も関係します。 さまざまな人、音、場所、生活環境などを無理のない範囲で経験することは、その後の生活にもつながります。 一方で、同じような環境で育った兄弟姉妹でも、性格がまったく同じになるわけではありません。 生まれ持った気質や成長過程での経験、その後の生活環境など、さまざまな要素が関係します。 だからこそ、 「社会化すれば必ず誰にでも懐く犬になる」 というものでもありません。 社会化の目的は、誰にでも触らせる犬を作ることではなく、さまざまな状況に出会ったときに、できるだけ落ち着いて対応できる経験を増やしていくことだと考えています。 「イタグレだから」ではなく、その子自身を見る イタグレには、家族との距離が近く、甘えん坊な子が多いという魅力があります。 でも、 初対面から人が大好きな子。 少し時間をかけて仲良くなる子。 家族にはベッタリだけれど他人には慎重な子。 ひとりで静かに過ごす時間も好きな子。 性格は本当にさまざまです。 犬種の特徴を知ることはとても大切です。 ただ、それと同じくらい、 目の前にいる一頭をよく見ること。 これも、犬と暮らすうえで大切なことだと思っています。 「イタグレはこういう犬」と決めつけるのではなく、その子が何を好きで、何が苦手で、どんな距離感なら安心できるのか。 一緒に暮らしながら少しずつ知っていくことも、イタグレとの生活の楽しさのひとつです。 CuddlyAnimalでは、犬種としての特徴だけでなく、一頭一頭の性格や成長も見ながら子犬たちと向き合っています。 これからイタグレを迎えたいと考えている方には、「人懐っこい子がいい」「落ち着いた子がいい」など、見た目だけでなくどんな暮らしをしたいのかもぜひお聞かせください。

And in many cases, that description is very accurate. They may crawl under a blanket with you, curl up on your lap, or follow you from room to room simply because they want to stay close. That close relationship with their family is one of the wonderful things about living with an Italian Greyhound. However, there is an important distinction: Being affectionate does not necessarily mean being friendly with everyone. Affectionate with family, cautious with strangers Some Italian Greyhounds are extremely affectionate with their family but more reserved when meeting unfamiliar people. They may keep their distance, watch someone carefully before approaching, or move away when a stranger tries to touch them. Others are completely different and happily greet new people as though they have known them forever. There are tendencies within the breed, but every Italian Greyhound has an individual personality. A dog that is cautious around strangers is not automatically abnormal simply because Italian Greyhounds are often described as affectionate. A sensitive and observant breed Many Italian Greyhounds are sensitive to changes in their surroundings. New people, unfamiliar environments, unusual sounds, or sudden movements may cause some dogs to pause and assess the situation before approaching. This does not always mean that the dog dislikes people. Sometimes the dog is simply asking: “Is this person safe?” Caution itself should not automatically be treated as a behavioral problem, although severe fear or anxiety that interferes with everyday life may require additional support. Don’t force an interaction When an Italian Greyhound is cautious, forcing an introduction can sometimes make the situation more difficult. Instead, allow the dog to observe from a comfortable distance. Give them time to investigate and smell the person when they are ready, and make sure they have enough space to move away if they feel uncomfortable. For some dogs, trust develops gradually. The goal should not be to make the dog interact as quickly as possible. The priority should be helping the dog feel safe. Early experiences matter — but they don’t determine everything Experiences during puppyhood can influence how a dog responds to people and unfamiliar situations later in life. Positive, appropriate exposure to different people, sounds, environments, and everyday experiences can be very valuable. However, even littermates raised in similar environments can develop very different personalities. Genetic temperament, early experiences, later learning, and the dog’s living environment can all contribute. This is why socialization does not simply mean creating a dog that allows everyone to touch them. A better goal is to help the dog develop the confidence and experience needed to cope with different situations. Look at the individual dog Many Italian Greyhounds are wonderfully affectionate with their families. But one may enthusiastically greet every stranger, another may need time before approaching, and another may prefer to reserve most of their affection for the people they know best. Understanding breed characteristics is important. But understanding the individual dog in front of you is just as important. Rather than assuming, “Italian Greyhounds are always like this,” we should learn what makes each dog comfortable, what they enjoy, and what they find difficult.
