Are Italian Greyhounds Difficult for First-Time Dog Owners? What You Should Know Before Bringing One Home English Version One question we occasionally receive from prospective owners is: “Can I have an Italian Greyhound if I’ve never owned a dog before?” At CuddlyAnimal, we don’t believe that Italian Greyhounds are unsuitable simply because someone is a first-time dog owner. Many people have happily welcomed an Italian Greyhound as their very first dog. However, there can be a difference between the elegant image people have of the breed and what everyday life with an Italian Greyhound is actually like. They can be more sensitive than they look Italian Greyhounds are elegant and athletic, but many also have a sensitive and cautious side. Some may be wary of loud noises, unfamiliar environments, strangers, other dogs, or sudden changes. At the same time, once they feel safe, many become incredibly affectionate and love being close to their family. Understanding both sides of their personality is an important part of living with an Italian Greyhound. Socialization doesn’t have to wait until every vaccination is complete Protecting puppies from infectious diseases is extremely important. However, this doesn’t mean that a puppy must experience nothing outside the home until its vaccination program is complete. Being carried outdoors, riding in a car, seeing different people, hearing everyday sounds, and safely experiencing different environments can all be valuable forms of socialization. For cautious puppies in particular, gradual and positive exposure to the outside world can help build confidence. When your puppy can safely walk on public ground will depend on vaccination status and local disease risks, so always discuss this with your veterinarian. Being slender doesn’t mean they should never run Italian Greyhounds require appropriate precautions because injuries, including fractures, can occur. Safe flooring, preventing dangerous jumps, and supervising play are important. However, avoiding all running and play is not necessarily the answer. Italian Greyhounds are sighthounds. Many love to run and play when given an appropriate and safe opportunity. Exercise should be adjusted to the individual dog’s age, physical development, body condition, and temperament. There are some breed-specific considerations Italian Greyhounds are sensitive to cold and may need warm clothing, comfortable bedding, and appropriate indoor temperatures during colder months. Some owners also find toilet training challenging, particularly when routines or environments change. Escape prevention is another important consideration. Because of their slender build, special care should be taken with collars and harnesses, as well as doors, gates, gardens, balconies, and getting in and out of vehicles. Recall training is especially important Recall is something we strongly encourage owners to practice. Even with careful management, unexpected situations can happen. A harness may slip off. A door may accidentally open. A sudden noise may frighten a dog and cause them to run. Catching a frightened Italian Greyhound once they have started running can be extremely difficult, especially in an unfamiliar area. This is why we encourage owners to build positive recall from everyday life. Teach your dog that hearing their name and coming back to you means safety, praise, fun, and good things. Recall isn’t simply a trick. It can be an important skill that helps protect your dog. Experience matters less than willingness to learn Having owned many dogs does not automatically mean someone will understand every Italian Greyhound. And being a first-time dog owner does not mean you cannot provide a wonderful home for one. Learn about the breed. Ask questions when you don’t know something. Observe the individual dog in front of you. Every Italian Greyhound has their own personality. Rather than assuming that every IG will behave the same way, take the time to understand the dog you are living with. Your first dog can be an Italian Greyhound It is completely normal to have questions when welcoming your first dog. Learn as much as you can before bringing one home, and don’t hesitate to ask your breeder for guidance. At CuddlyAnimal, we welcome questions both before and after our puppies go to their new homes. Rather than choosing an Italian Greyhound simply because they “look easy to keep,” we hope people will first understand the breed and then think: “This is the breed I truly want to share my life with.”
