Version Why Do Older Puppies Sometimes Cost Less? A Breeder’s Mixed Feelings About “Discounting” a Puppy When looking for a puppy, you may notice that an older puppy is sometimes offered at a lower price than a two- or three-month-old puppy. This also happens at CuddlyAnimal. However, I have always had mixed feelings about the idea that a puppy’s price should decrease simply because the puppy has grown older. From a breeder’s perspective, the time, care, and resources invested in that puppy have actually increased. So why does the price sometimes go down? I think the answer becomes clearer when we consider both the breeder’s perspective and the perspective of the family bringing the puppy home. Does an Older Puppy Cost the Breeder Less? No. The puppy continues to eat, receive daily care and appropriate veterinary care, exercise, interact with people and other dogs, and develop as an individual. As puppies grow, we also learn more about them. Their personalities become clearer. Their preferences become clearer. We begin to understand what makes them comfortable, what they enjoy, and what they may find difficult. From my perspective, an older puppy has not become “less valuable.” I simply know that puppy better than I did before. Why Can the Price Still Decrease? Because bringing home a two-month-old puppy and bringing home a five-, six-, or eight-month-old puppy are different experiences. A very young puppy already has an individual temperament, but much of its everyday experience with a family is still ahead. An older puppy has already developed routines, preferences, experiences, and a more recognizable personality. A new family is therefore not starting from zero. They are welcoming the dog as it has already begun to become. There Are Advantages to Choosing an Older Puppy An older puppy can also have significant advantages. Its body is more developed. Feeding may be more established. Its personality is easier to observe. A family may have a clearer idea of whether the dog is active, cautious, people-oriented, dog-oriented, independent, or affectionate. Instead of wondering what a very young puppy may eventually become, families can make their decision with more information about the individual dog. An Older Puppy Is Not a Blank Page I sometimes think of this in terms of color. With a very young puppy, many colors of everyday experience will still be added after the puppy joins its family. An older puppy already carries some colors of its own. The goal should not be to erase those colors and start again. Instead, the new family’s colors are gradually added to what is already there. That takes understanding and sometimes patience—but it can also be a wonderful part of building a relationship. Age Can Actually Give a Breeder More Information Interestingly, breeders may sometimes appreciate having more time to evaluate a puppy. As a puppy matures, we can see more of its structure, movement, size, temperament, and overall development. When deciding whether a puppy may remain in a breeding program, getting older can actually provide valuable information. For a family, however, the priority may be different. Some families strongly prefer to begin living with a dog at a very young age. Neither perspective is inherently wrong. They simply reflect different priorities. An Older Puppy Has Not Lost Its Value This is the most important point I want to make. I do not believe that a puppy becomes less valuable because it gets older. In fact, I know more about that puppy today than I did yesterday. I know more about what it enjoys. I know more about what it dislikes. I know more about its personality. That is why reducing the price of an older puppy can still feel complicated to me. Making It Easier for the Right Family and Puppy to Meet When I adjust the price of an older puppy, I do not think: “This dog is older, so this dog is worth less.” Instead, I think about what it means for a new family to welcome a puppy that already has more life experience. Sometimes adjusting the conditions can make it easier for the right dog and the right family to find each other. So for me, it is not about reducing the value of the dog. It is about creating better conditions for a new relationship to begin. This is my own perspective as a breeder at CuddlyAnimal, and other breeders may see the subject differently. A Price Cannot Define a Puppy’s Value A two-month-old puppy is not automatically more valuable than a six-month-old puppy. They simply offer different experiences. At CuddlyAnimal, our philosophy is: “We breed not for trends, but with the dog’s life ten years from now in mind.” Whether a dog joins its family at two months, six months, or later, there are many years of life ahead. That is why I want to look beyond age and price and focus on the individual dog—and whether that dog and family can build a good life together.
