Version What Determines the Price of a Puppy? Why Becoming a Breeder Made Me Question the “Value” of a Dog Before I became a breeder, I sometimes looked at the price of a dog or cat and simply thought: “That’s expensive.” After becoming a breeder, however, my perspective changed completely. Not because I started believing that expensive puppies are automatically worth their price. In fact, I began asking a more difficult question: What should the price of a puppy actually be based on? A Puppy’s Story Begins Long Before Birth Breeding does not begin with mating. Long before puppies are born, breeders care for the parent dogs, evaluate potential breeding dogs as they mature, study pedigrees, consider health and genetic testing, and search for appropriate breeding partners. Even after a suitable male is found, a breeding may require a stud fee, travel, timing, and cooperation between breeders. And none of this guarantees puppies. Breeding Does Not Guarantee Pregnancy A female’s cycle may not progress as expected. The timing may not work. A mating may occur without resulting in pregnancy. And even when pregnancy is confirmed, a successful delivery cannot simply be taken for granted. Nature does not always follow a breeding plan. Birth Is Not the End of the Work Once puppies are born, they need careful observation and daily care. Their growth, feeding, health, environment, interaction with people, and experiences with other dogs all become part of their development. Even puppies from the same litter can have very different personalities. For me, raising puppies means watching the individual dog rather than treating every puppy the same. Responsibility Does Not End at Handover When a puppy joins a new family, my involvement does not necessarily disappear. Families may contact me about feeding, toilet training, behavior, development, or other concerns. The family will build their own life with that dog, but the dog will always have begun its life here. For that reason, I believe responsibility continues beyond the day a puppy leaves the kennel. Does a Higher Price Mean a Better Dog? I don’t believe so. Expensive does not automatically mean good, and inexpensive does not automatically mean bad. A champion is not automatically the perfect breeding dog. A smaller dog is not automatically better. A rare color does not automatically make a dog better. Price and quality cannot be reduced to one simple equation. Different breeders also prioritize different qualities. For my own breeding program, I consider structure, bone, depth of chest, movement, health, temperament, pedigree, and what I hope a particular dog can contribute to future generations. Don’t Look at the Dog Only Through the Price Tag Of course price matters. Anyone considering bringing a dog home should think realistically about their finances—not only the purchase price, but also the lifelong cost of food, veterinary care, and everyday life. But I hope people will look beyond the number. Who are the parents? Why did the breeder choose this particular pairing? What health considerations were made? How were the puppies raised? Will the breeder still be available after the puppy goes home? Sometimes these questions tell you more about a breeding program than the price itself. I Still Don’t Know the “Correct” Price of a Puppy Even now, if someone asks me: “What is the correct price for a puppy?” I cannot give a simple answer. A higher price does not automatically mean a better dog. A lower price does not automatically mean a worse dog. What matters to me is understanding why the puppy was bred, how the puppy was raised, and what responsibility stands behind that puppy. At CuddlyAnimal, our philosophy is: “We breed not for trends, but with the dog’s life ten years from now in mind.” There are decisions, time, effort, and responsibility behind every puppy that cannot be seen on a price tag. And perhaps that is why becoming a breeder has made the question of a puppy’s price more difficult for me—not easier.
