How Do Breeders Choose a Mating Partner? Why Breeding an Italian Greyhound Is More Than Finding a “Good Male”
When people think about dog breeding, it may seem simple: find a healthy, beautiful male and female and breed them together.
In reality, choosing a mating partner involves far more than that.
When I consider a breeding pair for my Italian Greyhounds, I look at many factors, including size, bone structure, depth of chest, overall balance, movement, health, genetic testing, temperament, pedigree, and genetic relationships.
And the more requirements you add, the fewer suitable candidates remain.
Size Is Only One Part of the Decision
In my previous article, I discussed why some Italian Greyhounds at CuddlyAnimal grow larger than people might expect.
A natural question is:
“Why not simply breed a larger female to a smaller male?”
Size certainly matters, but breeding cannot be based on size alone.
If I am looking for a smaller male, I may also want good bone, a deep chest, balanced structure, good movement, appropriate health and genetic testing, a stable temperament, and a pedigree compatible with the female.
And, if I am being particular, I would also like a face I personally love.
Every additional requirement makes the search more difficult.
Sometimes the Perfect Male Turns Out to Be Too Closely Related
Sometimes I find a male and immediately think, “I really like this dog.”
Then I study the pedigree.
And sometimes the answer becomes:
“Well… we’re related.”
As breeders retain dogs that represent the qualities they want to preserve, related bloodlines naturally become more common within their own breeding program.
Eventually, bringing in outside bloodlines becomes important.
But unrelated does not automatically mean suitable.
Introducing a new bloodline also means introducing the characteristics carried by that line.
Structure, movement, health, temperament, pedigree, and compatibility with my own dogs all need to be considered.
Finding a Great Stud Dog Does Not Mean You Can Use Him
Another part of breeding that people outside the breeding world may not see is the importance of trust between breeders.
Finding an excellent stud dog does not automatically mean his owner will agree to a breeding.
Responsible breeders may want to know who is asking, what their breeding philosophy is, how puppies will be raised, and how the bloodline will be handled in the future.
For that reason, relationships and introductions between breeders can sometimes affect which breeding opportunities are available.
Breeding may appear to be entirely about dogs, but trust between people can also influence the possibilities available to a breeding program.
Breeding Has Costs Before Puppies Even Exist
Stud fees can also be substantial, particularly for desirable bloodlines or accomplished males.
Health testing, genetic testing, transportation, reproductive timing, and other expenses may occur long before a pregnancy is confirmed.
And after all of that preparation, pregnancy is still not guaranteed.
A female’s cycle may not progress as expected.
The timing may not work.
A mating may take place without resulting in pregnancy.
Nature does not always follow our plans.
A Champion Is Not Automatically the Right Choice
Titles and show achievements can provide useful information about a dog, but a champion is not automatically the best breeding partner for every female.
A non-champion dog may have structure, movement, temperament, or a pedigree that I particularly want to preserve.
For me, the important question is not simply:
“Is this a highly awarded dog?”
It is:
“What does this dog have that I want to carry into the next generation?”
Breeding Is About the Next Generation
Choosing a mating partner is never based on one characteristic.
Not size alone.
Not appearance alone.
Not pedigree alone.
Not genetic testing alone.
Not titles alone.
For every pairing, I ask:
“Why does this combination make sense?”
At CuddlyAnimal, our philosophy is:
“We breed not for trends, but with the dog’s life ten years from now in mind.”
That thinking begins long before puppies are born.
It begins with deciding what we want to preserve, what we hope to improve, and why two particular dogs should become the parents of the next generation.
