私がウィペットという犬種に出会ったきっかけは、実はイタリアングレーハウンドでした。 CuddlyAnimalでは現在、イタリアングレーハウンド（イタグレ）を中心に、ウィペットを含むサイトハウンドたちと暮らし、繁殖をしています。 でも、最初から「いつかウィペットを繁殖したい」と考えていたわけではありません。 イタグレという犬種に惹かれ、もっと知りたいと思い、何年も調べ、実際に犬たちを見続けてきた先にウィペットがいました。 始まりは「Italian Greyhound」という名前への疑問 私がイタリアングレーハウンドを知った頃、ふと疑問に思ったことがありました。 なぜ、この犬には“Greyhound”という名前が入っているのだろう？ 「Italian」があるということは、ItalianではないGreyhoundもいるのだろうか。 そんな単純な疑問から、私はグレーハウンドについて調べ始めました。 そして、そこから興味はイタグレだけではなく、サイトハウンドそのものへ広がっていきました。 イタグレは、本当にグレーハウンドを小型化した犬なのか？ イタリアングレーハウンドについて調べると、「グレーハウンドを小型化した犬」という説明を目にすることがあります。 でも私は、何年もずっと、 「本当にそんな単純な話なのだろうか？」 と考えてきました。 古代には、現在のイタリアングレーハウンドにつながると考えられる小型のサイトハウンド型の犬たちが存在していたとされています。 もちろん、その犬たちが現在のイタグレとまったく同じ姿だったとは限りません。 今より痩せていたかもしれない。 毛質も違ったかもしれない。 顔つきも、サイズも違っていたかもしれない。 それでも、獲物を視覚で捉えて走るための身体という意味では、現在のサイトハウンドにつながる特徴を持っていたのではないか。 私はそんなことを想像します。 そのため私は、現在のGreyhoundをそのまま小さくしてItalian Greyhoundが誕生した、という一直線のイメージでは捉えていません。 もっと古い時代から存在したサイトハウンド型の犬たちが、それぞれの地域や用途、人との暮らしの中で選択され、現在の犬種へつながっていったのではないか。 これは犬種史として確定している事実を断定しているわけではありません。 古い犬種の成立には現在も分かっていないことが多く、ここには資料を読み、実際に犬たちを見ながら私自身が長年考えてきた仮説も含まれています。 Greyhoundという犬に強く惹かれた グレーハウンドについて調べるうちに、私はこの犬そのものにも強く惹かれるようになりました。 深い胸。 無駄のない筋肉。 細身なのに、決して華奢ではない身体。 そして、全身を使ったダイナミックな走り。 いかにも「筋肉質です」と主張するような体ではないのに、実際には走るための筋肉がしっかり備わっている。 機能の結果として生まれた美しさ。 私がサイトハウンドに感じる魅力の一つは、まさにそこです。 そしてGreyhoundの写真や走る姿を見るたびに、もう一つ思っていたことがあります。 「……グルー、お前、本当にイタグレだよな？（笑）」 CuddlyAnimalのグルーは、一般的なイタグレとしてはかなり大きな体格をしています。 もちろんグルーはイタリアングレーハウンドですし、Greyhoundの血が入っているという意味ではありません。 でも顔つきや身体、そして走ったときのダイナミックな身体の使い方を見ると、私にはどこかGreyhoundを思わせるところがあります。 もしかすると、それも私がGreyhoundにこれほど惹かれた理由の一つなのかもしれません。 好きだからこそ、Greyhoundは迎えなかった ただ、犬種が好きであることと、その犬を実際に迎えることは別だと思っています。 Greyhoundのことを知れば知るほど、 「自分の環境で、この犬らしく暮らせる生活を本当に用意できるだろうか」 と考えるようになりました。 十分に身体を動かせる環境。 日々の管理。 そして、すでに暮らしている犬たちとの生活。 私はたくさんの犬たちと暮らしながら繁殖をしています。 Greyhoundだけのために頻繁に広い場所へ連れて行くとしたら、その間ほかの犬たちはどうするのか。 好きだからこそ、「飼えるか」ではなく、その犬にとって十分な環境を用意できるかを考えました。 その結果、Greyhoundを迎えることは私の環境には合わないと判断しました。 その先で出会ったのが、Whippetでした Greyhoundをはじめ、さまざまなサイトハウンドについて調べていく中で出会ったのが、Whippet（ウィペット）です。 ウィペットは英国で発展したサイトハウンドで、現在の犬種が成立する過程にはGreyhound系の犬やTerrier系などが関わったと考えられています。 Greyhoundより小さく、Italian Greyhoundより大きい。 でも私がウィペットに惹かれた理由は、単に「ちょうどいいサイズだったから」ではありません。 深い胸。 しなやかな筋肉。 無駄のないシルエット。 そして、走ったときの身体の使い方。 何より、あの走りです。 Greyhoundについて調べながら惹かれていたものが、Whippetにもありました。 そして私の飼育環境を考えたとき、Greyhoundよりも現実的に、その犬らしい生活を用意できる犬種だと考えました。 実際にウィペットと暮らして分かったこと 実際にウィペットと暮らしてみると、身体や走りだけではない魅力もたくさんありました。 特に感じたのは、想像していた以上に賢いということ。 同じサイトハウンドでも、イタグレとはまた違った考え方や行動を見せます。 似ている部分は確かにあります。 でも、Italian GreyhoundとWhippetは「サイズが違うだけの同じような犬」ではありません。 それぞれに、その犬種ならではの魅力があります。 だから私は、ウィペットにイタグレと同じものを求めたいわけでもありません。 その犬種が持つ構造、機能、気質。 その犬らしさを大切にしながら繁殖していきたい。 これはイタグレでも、ウィペットでも変わらないCuddlyAnimalの考え方です。 なぜCuddlyAnimalではウィペットを繁殖しているのか 流行っていたからではありません。 イタグレに似ていたからでもありません。 イタリアングレーハウンドという犬をもっと知りたくて、Greyhoundという犬を知り、そこからサイトハウンドそのものを知りたくなりました。 何年も犬を見て、調べて、考えて。 その長い道の先に、Whippetがいました。 だからCuddlyAnimalでは現在、イタリアングレーハウンドだけでなく、ウィペットとも暮らし、繁殖をしています。 私たちが大切にしたいのは、見た目だけの美しさではありません。 深い胸や骨格、筋肉、身体の使い方。 それらがなぜその形になっているのか。 「走るための犬」としての構造と機能を大切にしながら、その犬が10年後も健やかに暮らせることを考える。 それが、CuddlyAnimalがサイトハウンドたちと向き合うときに大切にしていることです。 これからもウィペットと暮らしながら、この犬種について学び続けていきたいと思っています。

How My Love for Italian Greyhounds Led Me to Whippets — Why CuddlyAnimal Breeds Whippets My journey to the Whippet actually began with the Italian Greyhound. When I first became fascinated by Italian Greyhounds, one simple question came to mind: Why is this breed called the “Italian Greyhound”? That question led me to learn about Greyhounds, and eventually my interest expanded beyond one breed to the wider world of sighthounds. Italian Greyhounds are sometimes described simply as miniature Greyhounds. However, after years of studying the breed and living with many Italian Greyhounds, I have always felt that their history is more complex than that. Small sighthound-type dogs existed in ancient times, long before our modern breeds were formally established. Exactly what those dogs looked like is impossible to know. Their size, coat, and appearance may have been quite different from the Italian Greyhounds we know today. For that reason, I do not personally imagine the Italian Greyhound as simply a modern Greyhound reduced in size. Some parts of ancient breed history remain uncertain, so this includes my own thoughts and hypotheses developed through years of reading, observing, and living with sighthounds rather than a claim of established historical fact. My fascination with the Greyhound The more I learned about Greyhounds, the more fascinated I became. The deep chest. Lean, functional muscle. A body that appears elegant rather than heavy, yet possesses extraordinary athletic ability. And above all, their movement. There is a particular beauty in a body whose form exists because of its function. Greyhounds also kept reminding me of one particular Italian Greyhound at CuddlyAnimal: Glue. Of course, Glue is an Italian Greyhound. I am not suggesting that he has recent Greyhound ancestry. But his size, expression, movement, and the way he uses his body have often made me smile and think: “Glue… are you sure you’re an Italian Greyhound?” Loving a breed does not always mean owning one As much as I admired Greyhounds, I also had to consider whether I could provide the environment that would allow one to live the life I believe it deserves. For me, responsible ownership is not simply a question of whether I can keep a dog. It is also a question of whether I can provide an appropriate life for that particular breed while continuing to care properly for all of the dogs already living with me. For my environment, I decided that a Greyhound was not the right choice. And somewhere along that journey, I discovered the Whippet. Discovering the Whippet The Whippet developed in Britain, with Greyhound-type dogs and likely Terrier influence playing roles in the breed’s development. Whippets are smaller than Greyhounds and larger than Italian Greyhounds. But size alone was never the reason I fell in love with them. Their deep chests. Their lean muscles. Their efficient bodies. And above all, the way they run. After actually living with Whippets, I discovered even more qualities that I love — including how intelligent they can be and how different their personalities and behavior can be from Italian Greyhounds. They may share the sighthound silhouette, but they are not simply different sizes of the same dog. Each breed deserves to be understood for what it is. Why CuddlyAnimal breeds Whippets We did not begin breeding Whippets because they were fashionable. We did not choose them simply because they resemble Italian Greyhounds. I wanted to understand the Italian Greyhound. That curiosity led me to the Greyhound, then to the wider world of sighthounds. After years of observing, studying, questioning, and learning, I eventually found the Whippet. That is why Whippets are part of CuddlyAnimal today. Whether we are breeding Italian Greyhounds or Whippets, our philosophy remains the same: We value not only appearance, but also structure, movement, muscle, temperament, and function. We want to understand why a dog’s body is built the way it is and to consider not only the puppy standing in front of us today, but the dog it may become ten years from now. We will continue learning from the Whippets who share their lives with us and strive to preserve the qualities that make this remarkable sighthound what it is.
