Even When a New Dog Arrives, Life Goes On as Usual — Thoughts on Dogs Living in a Kennel and in a Family Home Today, we welcomed a new member to our kennel. His name is Joy, an almost six-month-old tricolor Pembroke Welsh Corgi boy with a beautiful black head. Joy comes from the same kennel as Latte, our fluffy Corgi. Because he has just arrived, we are not introducing him directly to all of our dogs right away. For now, they are meeting safely through a fence, allowing Joy to watch, smell, and gradually become familiar with his new surroundings. While watching everyone this evening, I suddenly realized something. Come to think of it, our dogs are always like this when a new dog arrives. They don’t all rush over or make a big fuss. They notice the newcomer, take a look, and then simply go back to whatever they were doing. And I do the same. I pick up poop, fill in the holes the dogs have dug, talk to everyone, and continue with my usual work. Of course, safety is a completely different matter. We never put a new dog straight into the group. We carefully observe their behavior, personalities, and compatibility before gradually introducing them. We take safety seriously, but apart from that, we try to keep everyday life as normal as possible. Perhaps this is partly because of the environment in which our dogs live. In many family homes, dogs may live with the same members for many years, so the arrival of a new dog can be a significant change. In a kennel, puppies are born, young dogs grow and leave for their new homes, and new dogs sometimes join us. Our dogs regularly live around different breeds, ages, sizes, and personalities. Perhaps for them, seeing an unfamiliar dog simply isn’t such an unusual event. Of course, this doesn’t mean that all kennel dogs behave this way or that family dogs behave differently. Every dog is an individual, and their reactions are influenced by personality, environment, and previous experiences. But after living with dogs for so many years, today I realized something that had become so normal to me that I had never really thought about it. Joy is still watching everyone from the other side of the fence. He doesn’t bark at the dogs, although he is a little cautious around unfamiliar people. There is no need to rush him. He can gradually learn about the dogs, the people, and the rhythm of everyday life here. As he becomes more comfortable, we will probably start to see more and more of his true personality. And I’m looking forward to discovering who Joy really is. Even when a new dog arrives, we don’t need to change everything. We take care of safety, and everything else continues as usual. The dogs enjoy their evening, I pick up poop and fill in holes, and life at the kennel goes on. Only now, there is one more little member among us. Welcome, Joy. 🐾
